How to unblock websites

If you use a computer other then your own perhaps at school or work your probably familiar with this situation. Your done your work or just plain bored, and just want to view your FaceBook profile, or watch a funny video or two on YouTube.com... only to find that those sites say Sorry this website is blocked!. It can be downright frustating and it may be  even be an insult to your intelligence.
But there are a ways to circumvent this access controls, several in fact. The foremost way is fairly easy: use a different browser. Most computer networks use Internet Explorer, with it configured to go threw a gateway proxy, not the good kind, but a filter proxy like Squid guard. If your  network admin is not too on the ball you may beable to use the portable version of Firefox instead on a USB thumbdrive.

On the other hand, they have locked down their computers so tightly you may not beable to run firefox from the USB drive or the filter intercepts all traffic regardless of browser settings. But you are not out of luck yet.

Which brings you to  another way around a restricted website: web proxies and Socks Proxies.( Socks Proxies will explained later). But a "web proxy" is a website that  mirrors another website by downloading the site for you then rewriting all the link in it to point back threw the web proxy so you can somewhat "seemlessly" browse the blocked site. So... how does that work? Well, you visit such a site and type a web address (called a URL) into your browser at work or school, the filter gate will check the address Host of the request  against of blacklist of URLs, such as www.youtube.com. However, the URL of the proxy server website may not be listed in the blacklist, so the filter lets the traffic through. The proxy server simply acts as a suragate. Your computer isn't going to Youtube. Your computer is going to another computer that is going to youtube!

The best thing about web proxy sites is they are easy to find, and free.

Where can you find web proxies? Everywhere! There are literally thousands of them  linked across the web. Just type "new proxies", "web proxy", "Unlock sites", "Unblock myspace", "Youtube proxy", etc into Google, Bing or Yahoo and make your choice. There are also entire websites devoted to creating lists of proxy servers like A-Z proxies and this site Hidefinder.com Actually, if you can find one of those sites, use it. Here's why: your network administrator isn't probably stupid. When you visit the same web proxy every day in and day out, they'll eventually notice all the traffic going to that website by exmaining their logs and realize it's a web proxy, and will add that proxy to the black list too, now your proxy is also blocked!. To avoid this, use a few  different web proxy servers each time-or at the very least rotate a few them during your during surfing, never use the same one constantly or for too long. If you need help to understand how to use a web proxy read, how to use a web proxy.

Proxy mailing lists. Most web proxy sites also offer Proxy mailing lists. If you see one of these consider joining it. This mailing lists sometimes will email you Brand new proxies to your mail right in the morning when you get to school. Almost guaranteed to not be blocked. But once again the network admistrator may not be that stupid and also be subscribed to the mailing list. ;-)

Another way if that doesnt work is too use a VPN, http or Socks proxies which are not free. These are IP addresses you put into browser settings. But these are not easy to find (For Free) and often publically listed ones for free are actually compromised computers by hackers who left the open proxy on it(Most likely for email spamming, honeypots, and such). Since these proxies are just an IP address with nobody to claim responsibilty for since its already a hacked computer, You'd would have to ask yourself, is something you want trust putting your password threw? But there are alternatives, use a paid one from a reputable providor such as Guardster, or hidemyass.com/vpn. Second way, do it yourself! You may beable to install linux on your home computer and access it with PUTTY at school or work with SSH to make a Homebrew SSH Socks5 proxy.
