This is a continuation from our guide how to unblock websites. PuTTY is a application which can act as a client for the SSH, Telnet, rlogin, and raw TCP computing protocols on Windows. Specifically were interested in the SSH protocol available on UNIX or Linux Operating system. SSH stand for Secure Shell and it is a powerfull encryption similiar to secure socket layer. With this you can open putty at a computer terminal and open up a proxy between putty and the Linux remote computer, then set up your browser configuation to use this as a Socks5 proxy. In this guide we will show you how to do this and make your own "poor mans" VPN, or Socks5 proxy.
What you will need
How this will work -- Since putty is an self contained application which does not need to be installled you should put it onto a USB stick and bring it with you wherever you go, (say work or school or the internet cafe). You launch putty and configure it with your browser and connect to your remote computer with linux and use it as a proxy gateway to route your traffic threw with SSH encryption. You may beable to blast threw any web filters and gain true anonymous surfing threw box you control.
If you do not have a remote computer you can use for this, you will have to set one up before you can try this. You could rent a VPS server at hosting site such as Hivelocity, Spry , theplanet, Fdcservers with centOS installed on it (Or any good linux OS will do) or install Linux as a second boot Operating system on your home computer or your friends computer and access that from a remote location with putty.
First step is open up putty , First you will be greeted with this menu. First thing to do is fill out the IP address of your remote computer with linux and the Port (Always port 22 for SSH unless you changed it).

After you have filled out the IP address with the IP address of the remote linux box and its port, the view down on the left pane for the "Connection" option then click on the "+ SSH" and click on Tunnels. Click "Dynamic" then type 8080 in the port Source port, then hit "Add" you should see D8080 appear in the forwarded ports. You are now nearly done!
Also note the port you choose is the one you will be connecting with your browser. (Explained later).

Next go back to the left pane where you see "SESSIONS", and now all you have to do is hit "Open". Putty will now open a black screen asking you to fill out a password and username. ( You will now have to type in your password and username, that is set up for the linux box to access it) After you are logged in. You may now continue to configure your browser.
What you must do is configure your browser to load its connection from 127.0.0.1 (the loop back interface) Open up Firefox and go to TOOLS->OPTIONS->Advanced and there you should see a option that says. Connection Settings that says under it "Configure how firefox connects to the internet". Click on that. Next you will see this.

Fill that out like so. Put 127.0.0.1 into the SOCKS Host. and put Port 8080 has we set up in putty under tunnels. For your information 127.0.0.1 is a loopback address so that means localhost or itself.
Now click okay. You should now beable to surf the internet threw your remote computer as a Socks5 proxy!
In internet Explorer 7 or 8. Go to TOOLS>Iinternet Options-> Connection Settings -> Click on "LAN Settings. Then click on "use a proxy server for lan connection", then click Advanced. And type 127.0.0.1 8080 for the SOCKS host.

There you have it, now you know how to set up a Socks5 proxy with putty.
