Wildlife Photography Hides in Albania

Albania is one of Europe's most underrated wildlife destinations — and one of its fastest-growing. Divjaka-Karavasta National Park on the Adriatic coast holds around 5% of the entire global Dalmatian Pelican population, making it one of the most accessible large pelican colonies on the continent. A 50-metre observation tower overlooks the lagoon, and boat trips reach the nesting island directly. Just south, the Vjosa-Narte Protected Landscape and Narta Lagoon are the most reliable flamingo sites in Albania, attracting Greater Flamingos, Avocets, Black-winged Stilts and a remarkable diversity of waders during migration — and a unique floating hide photography experience for serious photographers. The Prespa Lakes in the southeast are a world-class site shared with North Macedonia and Greece, where Dalmatian Pelicans nest on rocky islands in one of the most dramatic freshwater landscapes in the Balkans. In the far south, the Karaburun-Sazan National Marine Park is one of the last refuges of the critically endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal in the Adriatic, with boat tours also offering encounters with bottlenose dolphins and loggerhead sea turtles. The Albanian Alps in the north — Valbona Valley and Theth — shelter Brown Bear, Grey Wolf, Chamois and Golden Eagle in near-pristine wilderness, and international operators now run dedicated wildlife tours through these landscapes. Albania rewards those who visit early.
