Wildlife Photography Hides in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is an extraordinary and little-known wildlife destination spanning five distinct habitat zones from Caspian semi-desert to Greater Caucasus alpine meadows. The Besh Barmag headland north of Baku is one of the Western Palearctic's most spectacular migration bottlenecks — up to 2–3 million birds funnel through each autumn. Shirvan National Park south of Baku hosts 6,500 Goitered Gazelles that approach vehicles within metres at designated points, alongside Greater Flamingo on Flamingo Lake. The Gizilagaj (Kizil-Agach) Ramsar site on the Caspian shore shelters millions of migratory waterbirds from October through May, with single-day visits regularly yielding 100+ species. Hirkan National Park in the Talysh Mountains protects one of the world's most ancient subtropical forests and is the last Azerbaijani refuge of the Persian Leopard. The Khinalig and Laza villages in the Greater Caucasus are the premier bases for the five Caucasian endemic birds, while Nakhchivan exclave adds eastern specialities — Mongolian Finch, White-throated Robin, Radde's Accentor — found nowhere else in the country.
