Wildlife Photography Hides in Cambodia

Cambodia is one of the world's most important wildlife photography destinations for critically endangered species — a country where the Northern Plains hold the last viable populations of Giant Ibis, White-shouldered Ibis, Bengal Florican, and Sarus Crane, and where the Tonle Sap lake system supports waterbird colonies on a scale that has vanished everywhere else in Southeast Asia. The Giant Ibis — the world's largest ibis, with a global population of under 250 individuals — is the ultimate target: Tmatboey Community Bird Sanctuary in Preah Vihear Province, operated by Sam Veasna Conservation Tours (SVC), is the most reliable site on Earth to photograph this critically endangered species, with resident birds at the oxbow lake viewable at dawn from a floating hide platform. SVC — Cambodia's most important conservation-tourism operator — also runs specialist tours to Cambodia's other critically endangered birds: White-shouldered Ibis, Cambodian Laughingthrush (discovered 2012, confined to Phnom Aural), Cambodian Tailorbird (discovered 2013, found only in Phnom Penh's scrubland), and the Vulture Restaurant at Boeng Toal where Red-headed, Slender-billed, and White-rumped Vultures feed on carcasses provided by rangers. Prek Toal Core Area on the Tonle Sap lake is Southeast Asia's most important waterbird breeding colony: 3,000+ Spot-billed Pelicans, Painted Storks, Lesser Adjutants, and Milky Storks nest in the flooded forest, accessible by boat during the October–January dry-down. Kratie town on the Mekong is the most accessible site on Earth for Irrawaddy Dolphin photography, with a resident pool of 15–20 individuals at Kampi viewable by kayak year-round.

Aural Mountains – Cambodian Laughingthrush Tour

Guided Tour

Phnom Aural Wildlife Sanctuary, Kampong Speu Province

The Cambodian Laughingthrush is one of the world's most localised bird species, found only on Phnom Aural — Cambodia's highest mountain at 1,813 m — and adjacent peaks in the Cardamom Mountains. This elusive, recently described species was only confirmed as Cambodia's second endemic bird in 2012. Sam Veasna's 4-day tour involves a challenging trek to the upper montane forest zone where the laughingthrush and Cambodian Tailorbird are resident. The ascent through multiple forest zones also produces pittas, broadbills, hornbills and high-altitude forest birds rarely encountered on lowland tours. Tour price $1,765/person.
