Wildlife Photography Hides in Cook Islands
The Cook Islands, a self-governing nation in free association with New Zealand, is one of the Pacific's most extraordinary conservation success stories — home to the Rarotonga Monarch (Kakerori), a flycatcher that was reduced to just 29 individuals in 1989 and has been brought back to over 350 birds through the Cook Islands Natural Heritage Trust's predator control programme. The Takitumu Conservation Area on Rarotonga's southern slopes is the bird's stronghold, with guided morning walks led by CINHT rangers offering almost certain encounters. Atiu Island is the only location on Earth for the Atiu Swiftlet (Kopeka), which navigates the dark interior of limestone caves by echolocation; George Mateariki leads the only authorised cave tours, conducted entirely by torchlight in the swiftlet's nesting caves. The Cook Islands are also one of the Pacific's most productive Humpback Whale destinations (July–September), with mother-calf pairs in the calm lagoons of Aitutaki and Rarotonga.
