10 fixed hides on a private estate in Normandy. Highlights include an underground kingfisher hide, drink station for forest birds, two little owl hides and a cuckoo perch. Max 3 photographers on site at any time. €140 for 24h including accommodation. €110 per additional 24h. All images on the site taken by owners with modest focal lengths — accessible to non-specialist equipment.

Marais Poitevin – Vendée

5 fixed hides in wet meadows of the Marais Poitevin. Managed by Hugues des Touches — 30-year conservator of the Saint-Denis-du-Payré National Nature Reserve. Raptor hide at a charnier, kestrel hide at barn level (March–July), barn owl hide at nest (June–August), waterbird hide at pond, white stork hide at nest (spring). Overnight accommodation at the farm.

Vallée de la Loire – Loir-et-Cher

4 ground-level fixed hides in the meadows of the 5,440-hectare Chambord estate — the largest walled forest park in Europe. Equipped with folding tables, ball-head supports and camouflage nets. Andorran Pyrenees – Ariège border (above 2,200m)

Overnight hide stay at a western capercaillie lek at 2,200m in the Andorran Pyrenees. Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park – Lot (Concots, near Cahors)

Self-catering gîte with on-site wildlife hides across a 12-hectare property in the Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park. Hides include a reflection pool hide and a woodland-edge hide, all within a 5-minute walk of the accommodation. Run by resident professional wildlife photographer Simon Phillpotts (15+ years). Arjuzanx – Morcenx-la-Nouvelle – Landes (40110)

Dedicated crane photography hide sessions at one of Europe's finest wintering crane reserves. 20,000–25,000 common cranes (grue cendrée) overwinter at Arjuzanx in the Landes pine forest each year. Observatory with 5 large lens ports adjacent to roost sites; pre-dawn entry required to be in position before the crane departure flight at dawn. Bassin d'Arcachon – Gironde (Le Teich, 33470)

20 purpose-built photography hides on one of France's premier ornithological reserves at the mouth of the Leyre river on the Bassin d'Arcachon. Hides feature 21cm+ wide lens slots (fits 400mm f/2.8), adjustable arm rests, and low-level openings to avoid high-angle shots. 300+ species recorded; birds highly habituated to human presence — close approaches possible without large telephoto lenses.
