Wildlife Photography Hides in The Gambia
The Gambia punches far above its weight as a wildlife photography destination — a tiny country of just 11,000 km² that has recorded over 560 bird species, more than the entire British Isles, making it one of the most species-dense birding locations in the world. The Gambia has built a genuinely sophisticated wildlife photography infrastructure: the only purpose-built professional photo hide in West Africa at Mandinari (with eye-level water pools designed for kingfisher and waterbird photography), several lodge photo hides with feeding stations, and a dozen GBWA-certified guides who have made birding tourism their full-time livelihood. Kotu Creek is globally renowned in birding circles — 40–50 species achievable in a two-hour morning walk including nine kingfisher species, four hornbill species, and eight bee-eater species. The Baboon Islands (River Gambia National Park) harbour over 100 western chimpanzees in a unique reintroduction project running since 1979, accessible by boat circumnavigation. Kiang West National Park is one of West Africa's last significant hippo habitats, while Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve shelters the elusive African Finfoot and White-crested Tiger Heron in untouched mangrove channels. The contra-seasonal May–July window, when most visitors have left, coincides with breeding plumage and the highest photographic quality for resident species.
