The original Lake Kerkini pelican photography workshop, established by National Geographic photographer George S. South Aegean, Antikythera Island

Greece's only bird observatory, operating since 2004 on the remote island of Antikythera — the most-studied raptor migration bottleneck in the country. Arcturos is Greece's leading bear and wolf conservation NGO (est. 1992), operating wildlife sanctuaries for rescued animals that cannot be reintroduced into the wild. Their Nymfaio facility allows visitors to observe rescued bears and wolves in large semi-natural enclosures, with conservation education panels. Photography permitted (no flash). Macedonia, near Thessaloniki

A vast delta wetland on the doorstep of Thessaloniki (20 km) covering three river deltas and the Kalochori Lagoon, with 250+ recorded species. Strong for Greater Flamingo, spoonbills and waders in spring and autumn. The Evros Delta contains 319 bird species — over 70% of the entire Greek checklist — and is one of Europe's premier wetland birding sites. Access to the military zone requires a certified local eco-guide from the Loutra or Feres Information Centres. Lake Kerkini is arguably the most important wildlife photography destination in Greece, home to one of Europe's last large Dalmatian Pelican breeding colonies (~800 birds in winter). Small motor boats take photographers to eye level with the pelicans.
