Wildlife Photography Hides in Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe — a French overseas region shaped like a butterfly's wings, comprising the volcanic Basse-Terre and the flat coral Grande-Terre — is one of the eastern Caribbean's richest wildlife photography destinations, combining its only endemic bird species with outstanding cetacean photography and one of the Lesser Antilles' largest West Indian Manatee populations. The Guadeloupe Woodpecker (Melanerpes herminieri) — glossy black with deep red underparts that reflect iridescent purple — is found throughout Basse-Terre's forests from sea level to the La Soufrière cloud forest summit and is the Caribbean woodpecker most reliably encountered on a morning walk. The Parc National de la Guadeloupe's 17,300 hectares of primary cloud forest provide full access for self-guided photography. Offshore, Evasion Tropicale and other operators reach Sperm Whale in 45 minutes from Basse-Terre's coast — the deep-water Guadeloupe Passage supports year-round Sperm Whales alongside seasonal Humpbacks. The Îles de la Petite Terre nature reserve protects a Magnificent Frigatebird roost of hundreds of birds, the Critically Endangered Lesser Antillean Iguana, and a dense Green and Hawksbill Turtle snorkelling site accessible from Saint-François by day-trip. The Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin — the vast protected bay between Guadeloupe's two wings — holds the Lesser Antilles' most extensive mangrove forest and a significant West Indian Manatee population accessible by kayak at dawn.
