Wildlife Photography Hides in Iran
Iran is one of the Middle East's most biodiverse and undervisited wildlife photography destinations — a vast country of extraordinary ecological contrasts spanning the Caspian Hyrcanian forests (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the central salt deserts, the Persian Gulf mangroves, and the Zagros Mountains, with a fauna that bridges the Palearctic and Oriental realms. Iran holds the world's last viable population of Asiatic Cheetah — the critically endangered eastern subspecies, with fewer than 50 individuals remaining — centred on the Touran Biosphere Reserve and Kavir National Park in the central plateau; permit-based photography expeditions organised through SURFIRAN and IranRoute represent some of the rarest wildlife encounters available to photographers anywhere. Golestan National Park, Iran's oldest protected area, holds a large and well-studied Persian Leopard population alongside Caspian Red Deer, Brown Bear, and Goitered Gazelle in Hyrcanian temperate forest; spring dawn walks on the forest tracks produce encounters with deer and bear in atmospheric light. The Anzali Lagoon and Miankaleh Peninsula on the Caspian shore are globally important Ramsar wetlands where Dalmatian Pelicans, Pygmy Cormorants, and rare migratory waterbirds winter in concentrations rarely seen elsewhere in western Asia. Lake Urmia, when water levels allow, hosts one of the world's largest Greater Flamingo congregations — hundreds of thousands of birds on the vast salt lake in spring and autumn.

Self GuidedKhuzestan Province (Dezful)
One of only two locations in Iran — alongside Dasht-e Naz — where the critically endangered Persian Fallow Deer can be reliably observed in near-wild conditions. The Dez Wildlife Refuge in Khuzestan Province was created specifically to protect the deer population rediscovered here in 1956; numbers have grown from a handful to over 1,000 individuals in recent decades. The Dez River corridor adds otters, herons, and Black Stork to the species list. Permits from the provincial Department of Environment required; nearest city Dezful with good hotels.
