Wildlife Photography Hides in Jordan

Jordan is one of the Middle East's most rewarding and stable wildlife photography destinations — a country of extraordinary landscape diversity from the fertile Jordan Valley to the Dead Sea, the red sandstone canyons of Wadi Rum, and the Red Sea coast, with a wildlife network managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) that is among the most professional in the Arab world. Dana Biosphere Reserve in the Rift Valley escarpment is Jordan's finest wildlife photography site: Nubian Ibex navigate the canyon walls at dawn, Sand Cat has been GPS-collared in the reserve, Sinai Rosefinch flocks brighten the desert scrub in winter, and Rüppell's Vultures and Bonelli's Eagles patrol the thermals. Azraq Wetland Reserve in the eastern desert — once a vast oasis now reduced to a remnant managed by RSCN — is Jordan's most important migratory bird staging post, with a photography hide overlooking the open water; Basra Reed Warbler, Citrine Wagtail, and rare waders pass through in numbers. Shaumari Wildlife Reserve holds Arabia's first reintroduced Arabian Oryx population, established in 1978 from the last wild-caught individuals, now photographable from open-vehicle safaris. Wild Jordan — RSCN's tourism arm — operates all major reserves with professional guiding and eco-lodge accommodation.
