Wildlife Photography Hides in Latvia
Latvia is a quietly outstanding wildlife photography destination — vast, affordable and barely on the tourist radar. The Latvian countryside is 54% forested, and three-quarters of the country is essentially wild: boreal forest, raised bogs, river valleys and a sparsely populated coast. Lake Lubāns in the east is the country's most productive birding site, where the SKUA Reserve operates three purpose-built hides for White-tailed Eagles, Ospreys, Great Bitterns and Otters on the fringes of one of the largest floodplain lakes in the Baltic states. The Slītere National Park in Kurzeme is a primeval forest stronghold for Western Capercaillie, Black Stork, Lesser Spotted Eagle and Hazel Grouse — the Kurzeme coast is also one of the most reliable raptor migration watchpoints in northern Europe, with Cape Kolka concentrating thousands of Honey Buzzards, Ospreys and Sparrowhawks each autumn. Teici Strict Nature Reserve hosts the largest concentration of Common Cranes in Latvia during migration, while Pape Nature Park on the southwest coast is a dedicated observation point for both migrating and breeding wetland birds. The Gauja National Park in the northeast delivers lynx tracks, wolf howls and occasional Brown Bear sightings in Latvia's most scenic river valley landscape. For self-guided photographers, Engure Lake, Kemeri National Park and the Cape Kolka headland are freely accessible and consistently productive.
