Wildlife Photography Hides in Liberia

Liberia contains the largest surviving intact expanse of West African rainforest — an extraordinary biodiversity reservoir that has survived largely because of the country's decades of isolation from international tourism. Sapo National Park (180,000 ha) is the second-largest protected lowland rainforest in West Africa and holds one of the world's most significant populations of pygmy hippopotamus alongside 500–1,640 western chimpanzees, seven species of duiker including the Critically Endangered Jentink's Duiker and Zebra Duiker, forest elephants, and giant pangolins. The Sapo Ecolodge, 45 minutes inside the park, offers canoe photography of pygmy hippos on the Sinoe River and night spotlighting for water chevrotain and speckle-throated otters. The first specialist mammal-watching expedition into Sapo, run by Pictus Safaris in January 2024, documented 25 mammal species — a remarkable tally suggesting the park is among the most mammal-rich accessible forests in West Africa. East Nimba Nature Reserve, accessible from the comfortable Nimba Ecolodge at 850 m elevation near Yekepa, holds all 15 West African forest endemic birds within a relatively compact area reachable by day hiking. The Nimba Flycatcher — endemic to a tiny highland range on the Guinea-Liberia-Côte d'Ivoire border — is the flagship target, alongside the extraordinarily large Giant African Swallowtail Butterfly and the Critically Endangered Nimba Otter Shrew. Warkolor Jungle Lodge on Lake Piso (Liberia's largest lake, a Ramsar wetland) provides comfortable accommodation for wildlife photography of manatees, crocodiles, and 130+ wetland bird species near the Atlantic coast.
