Wildlife Photography Hides in Malaysia
Malaysia is one of the world's premier wildlife photography destinations — a country split between Peninsular Malaysia and the two Bornean states of Sabah and Sarawak, each offering radically different but equally extraordinary wildlife. Sabah's Kinabatangan River is Southeast Asia's most productive river for wildlife photography: a narrow corridor of riverine forest flanked by oil palm where Proboscis Monkeys, Bornean Pygmy Elephants, Orangutans, Storm's Storks, and Wrinkled Hornbills concentrate along the banks; multiple lodges including Sukau Rainforest Lodge and Bilit Adventure Lodge offer dawn and dusk boat safaris with near-guaranteed sightings. Danum Valley Conservation Area — 438 km² of completely undisturbed lowland dipterocarp rainforest — is Malaysia's most biodiverse site, with Bornean Clouded Leopard (the most-photographed wild cat in Sabah), Orangutan, Bornean Gibbon, and over 320 bird species accessible from the field centre's forest trails and night drives; Wildlife Worldwide's annual photography expedition with Nick Garbutt and Alex Hyde is one of Asia's most celebrated photo tours. Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where rescued orangutans are prepared for forest reintroduction, provides some of Southeast Asia's most intimate primate photography. Peninsular Malaysia's Fraser's Hill is a classic montane birding site, with Malaysian Rail-babbler, Rufous-collared Kingfisher, and Long-tailed Broadbill accessible on the road transect at dawn; Royal Belum State Park in Perak is one of the last places on Earth to find all 10 Malaysian hornbill species in a single morning, alongside Malayan Tiger, Asian Elephant, Malayan Tapir, and Sun Bear.
