Wildlife Photography Hides in Martinique
Martinique — the northernmost of the Windward Islands and a French overseas region — is home to one of the Caribbean's most geographically restricted birds and one of its most dramatic marine mammal photography settings. The Martinique Oriole (Icterus bonana) is a Critically Endangered species found only on this island, estimated at fewer than 5,000 individuals and declining due to Shiny Cowbird nest parasitism; the Presqu'île de la Caravelle Natural Reserve on the northeast Atlantic coast is the most reliable photography site, where resident guides know the territories of individual pairs in the scrub above the coastal cliffs. The Blue-headed Hummingbird (Cyanophaia bicolor), endemic only to Martinique and Dominica, is present throughout Martinique's forests and a compelling photography target in its own right. Offshore, Humpback Whale photography (December–April) is conducted against the extraordinary backdrop of Martinique's volcanic peaks, with Mont Pelée's symmetrical cone visible from the offshore waters; Sperm Whale are present year-round in the Martinique Passage. Sea turtle nesting monitoring at Grande Anse des Salines (Leatherback, March–July) provides guided night beach access through the Kawann association. The Rocher du Diamant dive site — a volcanic pinnacle commissioned by the British Royal Navy in 1804 — provides dramatic underwater photography.
