Codru Reserve, Strășeni District

Moldova's oldest protected area (est. 1971), covering 5,177 ha of central-European oak-hornbeam forest 50 km from Chișinău. Entry requires advance scheduling; a nature museum with specimens and maps is on-site. On-site accommodation reportedly available. Photography focus: forest birds and deer at dawn/dusk. A peaceful, rarely-crowded reserve with 151 bird species and 52 mammal species recorded.

Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve, Cahul District

Moldova's top birding site — a 628-hectare shallow oxbow lake with an EU/UNDP-funded observation tower, parking and rehabilitated access road. Accessed from Slobozia Mare village, 200 km south of Chișinău. The reserve holds 196 recorded bird species of which 45 are on Moldova's Red Book. Boat trips can be arranged informally with locals.

Manta Floodplain, Cahul District

Lake Manta (2,100 ha) is one of Moldova's largest wetland complexes and a key Important Bird Area. The hilltop above Manta village gives panoramic views over the floodplain ponds. No formal infrastructure but consistently productive for waterbirds and raptors. Often combined with Lake Beleu for a two-day southern Moldova birding circuit.

Lower Dniester NP, Căușeni / Ștefan Vodă Districts

Moldova's newest national park with EU-funded ecotourism boat and walking routes including "Kingdom of the Birds" (20 km birdwatching excursion through the estuary) and "Dniester Amazon" (river channel route with 6 observation stops). The river delta hosts white and Dalmatian pelicans, breeding Eastern Imperial Eagles and over 288 recorded bird species. Located 95 km from Chișinău.

Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve, Cahul District

Moldova's most established wildlife tourism base, winner of the UNWTO Best Tourism Village 2023. Complex Văleni offers 4-hour guided birdwatching excursions into the Lower Prut UNESCO Biosphere Reserve including boat access to Beleu Lake, with binoculars provided. Guesthouse and rustic cottages on site for overnight stays.

Nationwide (based in Chișinău)

Two volunteer birding contacts in Chișinău offer to show visiting birders Moldova's best sites on weekends, reaching Lake Beleu, Manta, Codru and the Dniester valley. Orheiul Vechi, Orhei District

Moldova's most developed self-guided birdwatching infrastructure — 6 fully marked routes through limestone canyon, Raut River floodplain, oak forest and farmland habitats, totalling ~40 km of trails. Free downloadable route guides list expected species per route. Guesthouses in the photogenic Butuceni village provide overnight stays with the cave monastery as backdrop. One of the most scenic birding destinations in the country.

Pădurea Domnească Nature Reserve, Glodeni District

The "Țara Bâtlanilor" (Land of the Herons) site within Pădurea Domnească holds one of Moldova's most spectacular wildlife spectacles — a mixed heronry of ~1,000 pairs nesting on ancient oaks. Day excursions from Chișinău combine the heronry, a Zimbrăria European Bison enclosure, limestone gorges, and reservoir birdwatching. Budget group format; private guiding available on request.

Plaiul Fagului Reserve, Ungheni District

Moldova's finest beech forest reserve (5,642 ha), maintained as a strictly scientific reserve — visitor access only with advance arrangement and ranger guide. Pandatur runs affordable day excursions from Chișinău with guided forest walks through old-growth beech-oak-hornbeam ecosystem. Photography focus: forest birds and woodland mammals, best at dawn before group arrivals.

Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve, Cahul District

One of Moldova's most ambitious ecotourism projects, combining limestone cliff geology, river-edge wetland birding and rural cultural tourism.
