Wildlife Photography Hides in Morocco

Morocco is one of Africa's most accessible and rewarding wildlife photography destinations — a country of extraordinary ecological contrasts where the High Atlas, Sahara Desert, Atlantic wetlands, and Mediterranean north each deliver unique species and habitats within a compact, well-connected circuit. The Northern Bald Ibis — one of the world's rarest birds with fewer than 500 wild individuals — nests on sea cliffs at Tamri and Souss-Massa National Park, where expert local guides lead small groups to the colonies at close range. The Erg Chebbi sand dunes near Merzouga are the gateway to Africa's finest desert birding: Desert Sparrow, Pharaoh Eagle-Owl, Houbara Bustard, and Egyptian Nightjar by spotlighting, plus the enchanting Fennec Fox at dawn. The Tagdilt Track — a rough piste through elevated stony hammada — is arguably the most famous desert birding site on the continent, concentrating Cream-coloured Courser, Thick-billed Lark, and six sandgrouse species. The High Atlas at Oukaïmeden delivers African Crimson-winged Finch, Wallcreeper, and Barbary Partridge at 2,700m. Jbel Moussa on the Strait of Gibraltar witnesses one of the world's great raptor migrations each autumn.

Azrou Cedar Forest — Barbary Macaque & Middle Atlas Woodland Birds

Guided Tour

Fès-Meknès (Azrou, Ifrane, Middle Atlas)

The cedrus atlantica forests around Azrou and Ifrane in the Middle Atlas are Morocco's finest woodland birding habitat and the most accessible place in the world to see the Endangered Barbary Macaque. Troops of 20–50 macaques are regularly encountered along the forest roads between Azrou and Ifrane, habituated to vehicles and often feeding alongside the road. The cedar forest bird community includes Levaillant's Woodpecker (a North African endemic), Short-toed Treecreeper, African Blue Tit, African Chaffinch, and Red Crossbill. Tawny Owl breeds here; Double-spurred Francolin is found in the scrub margins at dawn. Multiple operators run day trips from Fez (1–1.5 hours), including Sahara Atlas Tours and Mouhou Tours (approximately $40 per person for a private day). The site is easily self-driven from Fez or Meknes; roadside macaque encounters require no walking at all. Combine with the Ifrane National Park ski area for additional montane species in spring.

Dades Gorge & Boumalne Dades — Canyon Raptors & Desert Edge Birds

Self Guided

Draa-Tafilalet (Boumalne Dades, Dades Gorge)

The dramatic canyon system of the Dades Gorge north of Boumalne du Dades provides outstanding viewpoints for cliff-nesting raptors. Egyptian Vulture breeds in the larger canyon walls and is regularly seen soaring on morning thermals. Lanner Falcon hunts along the cliff edges; Bonelli's Eagle and Long-legged Buzzard patrol the wider valley. The canyon scree and boulder slopes are prime habitat for Tristram's Warbler — a range-restricted North African warbler of arid scrub. Blue Rock Thrush perch prominently on boulders throughout the gorge. Crag Martin nests in cliff crevices and swarms over the canyon at dusk with Alpine Swift. The narrow gorge road (continue north from Boumalne 20–25 km to the ""monkey fingers"" rock formations and narrowing canyon) is self-driveable. Park at canyon viewpoints and scan the opposite cliff faces with binoculars or a scope. Birds of Morocco Tours offer guided half-day and full-day canyon tours from Boumalne; contact WhatsApp +212636499157. Best March–October before peak summer heat.

Jbel Moussa — Strait of Gibraltar Raptor Migration Watchpoint

Self Guided

Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma (Jbel Moussa)

Jbel Moussa (840 m) on Morocco's northern tip is the African counterpart to Gibraltar's migration watchpoints — a BirdLife IBA where hundreds of thousands of raptors concentrate each year to gain altitude before crossing the 14 km Strait of Gibraltar. Griffon Vulture, Short-toed Eagle, European Honey Buzzard, and Black Kite are the commonest migrants; White Stork and Black Stork move in impressive numbers. Spring 2017 counts recorded over 40,000 birds of 20 raptor species in 64 days. Autumn (August–October) is the main southbound migration season; spring (February–May) sees the northbound return. The resident bird community includes Golden Eagle, Bonelli's Eagle, Long-legged Buzzard, Barbary Partridge, and Red-billed Chough. The CRV (Centre de Récupération des Vautours) research station at Jbel Moussa monitors migration annually and tags vultures for satellite tracking. The site is reachable by road from Ceuta or Tetouan; walking to the summit takes 90–120 minutes and requires moderate fitness.

Lac de Sidi Boughaba — Freshwater Ramsar Reserve Near Kenitra

Rabat-Salé-Kénitra (Mehdia, Kenitra)

Lac de Sidi Boughaba (also written Sidi Bourhaba) is Morocco's most important freshwater lake for waterbirds and the last permanent freshwater body on the country's northwest Atlantic coast. Located 10 km south of Kenitra, the Ramsar-listed biological reserve covers 6 km of natural lake fringed by a red juniper forest — the only such forest in Morocco — and supports over 205 bird species. White-headed Duck winter here in numbers exceeding 100 — one of the most reliable sites for this globally threatened duck in all of North Africa. Red-knobbed Coot and Purple Swamphen breed in the reedbeds; Marsh Owl quarters the reed margins at dusk. Easy walking paths encircle the lake with a telescope-friendly open shore. Access from Kenitra: take the P4266 southwest to the lake; parking at the northwest end. The adjacent cork oak and juniper forest holds Short-toed Treecreeper and Atlas Flycatcher. Merja Zerga — Moulay Bousselham Lagoon Wetland Birding (Self-Guided)

Self Guided

Rabat-Salé-Kénitra (Moulay Bousselham)

Merja Zerga is one of Morocco's most important wetland birding sites: a large coastal lagoon of variable salinity with extensive intertidal mudflats, fringing marshes, and reedbeds separated from the Atlantic by a stabilised dune system. Located 70 km north of Kenitra, it holds 50,000–100,000 waders at peak periods and 15,000–30,000 overwintering ducks. The rare Marbled Teal has been recorded, and Marsh Owl is a regular dusk bird over the reedbeds. Audouin's Gull and Slender-billed Gull are regular in the bay. Greater Flamingo are present year-round. The site is a Ramsar-listed wetland and Important Bird Area. Boat trips onto the lagoon are available through local fishermen at Moulay Bousselham port (approximately €25/hour) — these provide outstanding close views of feeding flamingos and waders. The site is accessible from Moulay Bousselham village on foot or by grand taxi from Kenitra. Best September–April for wader and wildfowl diversity.

Over 400 bird species have been recorded in and around the lagoon. Flamingos — sometimes hundreds of them — wade in the shallows at close range; Marbled Duck, a globally near-threatened species, uses the quieter reed-fringed margins. Osprey are regular, and the rare Marsh Owl is a dusk speciality over the margins. Boat and kayak tours are available via Hotel La Sultana Oualidia for waterside access to otherwise inaccessible flamingo flocks and tern colonies. The lagoon is best visited at mid-tide when mudflats are exposed and wader diversity peaks. Red-billed and Yellow-billed Choughs are common here; Shore Lark (Atlas subspecies) breeds on the rocky slopes; Rock Sparrow flock in the village. The cedar forests on the approach road host Levaillant's Woodpecker and Moussier's Redstart — two more North African endemics. Spring snow melt in April to May brings peak diversity. Wallcreeper is occasionally seen on the cliff faces after snowfall. The site is reached by a paved road from Marrakech in approximately two hours. Walking from the village across the plateau takes two to three hours at altitude; visitors should acclimatise slowly. A full-day visit is recommended, combining the ski village area with the cedar forest below.

Souss-Massa National Park — Northern Bald Ibis Nesting Cliffs at Tamri

Self Guided

Souss-Massa (Tamri, Agadir)

Souss-Massa National Park on Morocco's Atlantic coast is one of the last strongholds on Earth for the critically endangered Northern Bald Ibis (Waldrapp), with approximately 95% of the global wild population nesting on its sea cliffs. The Tamri estuary is the prime site, where colonies nest on sheer coastal cliffs directly above the Atlantic surf. The park was created in 1991 and covers 33,800 hectares of coastal lagoon, estuary, dune, and scrub habitats. The Oued Massa lagoon at the southern end of the park is equally exceptional, offering close views of flamingos, herons, spoonbills, and waders. Access to Tamri is straightforward from Agadir (40 km north via the coast road). The national park entrance at Sidi Rbat provides parking and an easy coastal trail. Best visited February to June when ibis are at the nest, but the lagoon holds birds year-round. No specialist guide required, though local birding guides are available.

Tagdilt Track — Premier Stony Desert Birding Site

Self Guided

Draa-Tafilalet (Boumalne Dades to Merzouga)

The Tagdilt Track is widely regarded as one of the finest stony desert birding sites in all of North Africa. A rough piste running through high-altitude hammada east of Boumalne du Dades, it provides easy vehicle-based access to an extensive stretch of stony desert supporting specialist species that are difficult to find elsewhere. Cream-coloured Courser, Thick-billed Lark, and Temminck's Lark are regular and often confiding. Multiple sandgrouse species — Pin-tailed, Black-bellied, and Crowned — fly at dawn to waterholes and can be watched from the vehicle. Pharaoh Eagle-Owl frequents the rocky canyon systems along the track edge. The site is self-driveable from Boumalne du Dades: take the track south from the town towards Taghbalt village and continue for 20–30 km, stopping at any promising patch. Early morning is essential — activity peaks in the first two hours after sunrise and largely ceases by mid-morning. A 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended. The track is incorporated into most Moroccan guided birding itineraries as a full-day visit.

Taroudant & Anti-Atlas — Moroccan Endemic Woodland & Scrub Birds

Guided Tour

Souss-Massa (Taroudant, Anti-Atlas)

The ancient walled city of Taroudant in the Souss Valley and the Anti-Atlas mountains immediately to the south offer some of the most accessible Moroccan endemic bird viewing in the country. The olive groves and argan forests around Taroudant hold Moussier's Redstart, African Blue Tit, and Levaillant's Woodpecker — three North African endemics readily seen on foot from the city ramparts. Maghreb Magpie (Moroccan endemic species) is common in agricultural areas. Fulvous Babbler, a delightful sociable species, inhabits scrubby acacia along wadis. The Anti-Atlas mountains to the south add Black-crowned Tchagra, Barbary Ground Squirrel, and Tristram's Warbler in lower-altitude scrub. The Travelling Naturalist's 11-day Morocco itinerary includes two nights in Taroudant and covers all these species as part of a southern Morocco circuit. The area is most rewarding February–May before summer heat; most sites are easily walked from Taroudant itself.

Toubkal National Park — Bearded Vulture, Bonelli's Eagle & High-Atlas Raptors

Guided Tour

Marrakech-Safi (Toubkal NP, Imlil, High Atlas)

Toubkal National Park, established in 1942 as Morocco's oldest national park, rises to 4,167 m at Jbel Toubkal — North Africa's highest peak. The precipitous valleys and cliff systems around the Imlil trailhead are the most reliable location in Morocco for Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier), now rare and highly localised in the country. Golden Eagle and Bonelli's Eagle nest on the sheer limestone faces. The approach valleys hold African Crimson-winged Finch, Alpine Accentor, and Shore Lark at altitude. A certified mountain guide is strongly recommended — the terrain is genuinely strenuous and the altitude demanding. Guides are available in Imlil village (80 km from Marrakech) through the local guide cooperative. Homestay accommodation in Amazigh villages supports local communities and provides early-morning positions for raptor watching. Best March–June after winter snow recedes; photography conditions are superb at dawn in the clear mountain air.

Zaers Forest — Double-spurred Francolin & Woodland Raptors Near Rabat

Self Guided

Rabat-Salé-Kénitra (Zaers Forest, SE Rabat)

The Zaers is the royal hunting forest southeast of Rabat, a rare remnant of natural cork oak and Mediterranean scrub forest on the Atlantic plains that hosts a remarkable number of Moroccan specialities at low altitude. The Double-spurred Francolin is the key target — a declining West African species at the northern edge of its range in Morocco's Atlantic forests, heard most reliably at dawn with its distinctive rolling call from dense scrub. Black-shouldered Kite is a regular raptor here; Booted Eagle breeds in the larger trees. Black-crowned Tchagra is a scrub skulker most easily located by song in spring. Short-toed Treecreeper works the cork oak bark. The forest is best visited at dawn to catch the francolin calling before it falls silent. The site is accessible by car from Rabat (20–25 km southeast); local birding guides from Rabat can be arranged through Morocco Birding or Birds of Morocco Tours. Combine with a morning visit to the Sidi Boughaba reserve nearby (30 km north) for a full day of Atlantic birding.
