Wildlife Photography Hides in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is the world capital of Birds of Paradise — an island of extraordinary biological richness where 39 of the 44 known species of these spectacular birds perform their elaborate courtship displays in rainforests accessible to photographers prepared for adventurous travel. The Southern Highlands around Tari are the most productive region: Ambua Lodge (Trans Niugini Tours) at 2,100m is the global benchmark for BoP photography, with Blue Bird-of-Paradise, Superb Bird-of-Paradise, Princess Stephanie's Astrapia, and King of Saxony display trees within walking distance of the lodge; guests photograph displaying males at dawn from concealed ground positions. Kumul Lodge at 2,600m on the road to Mount Hagen is famous for Ribbon-tailed Astrapia — the male with the longest tail-to-body ratio of any bird — feeding at the flower garden daily. Varirata National Park, just 42km from Port Moresby, provides the most accessible Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise photography in PNG, with large display trees in the forest above the visitor centre where up to 20 males can be seen simultaneously. The Tenkile Conservation Alliance in the Torricelli Mountains runs the only responsible ecotourism programme for Scott's Tree Kangaroo (Tenkile) — one of the world's rarest mammals with a wild population of under 400 — where community-guided forest walks locate the species with knowledge developed over generations. The Sepik River and Karawari Lodge provide access to Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise, several manucode species, and the extraordinary Crocodile totem culture of the Sepik people alongside genuine wildlife photography in undisturbed gallery forest.
