Hela Province (Tari Valley)

A 740-hectare wildlife sanctuary set at 800–1,200 m elevation, 40 km north of Mount Hagen in the Western Highlands. The sanctuary protects 185 bird species and eight mammal species in rainforest along the Baiyer River valley. Wildlife enclosures and open forest trails give close encounters with birds of paradise and other wildlife. The surrounding forest provides excellent habitat for free-ranging Birds of Paradise, with sightings common along the forest edge at dawn. Accessible by sealed road from Mount Hagen. Western Province

Remote wilderness lodge on the Bensbach River in the southwestern corner of Western Province, situated within the Tonda Wildlife Management Area approximately 10 km from the Indonesian border. 191 bird species recorded, with 250 species of resident and migratory birds reported seasonally including most of the world's population of Little Curlew. The lodge's sweeping floodplains teem with herds of Rusa Deer, wallabies, monitor lizards and are vital staging grounds for migratory shorebirds. Fergusson Island is the largest of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands in Milne Bay Province, home to the endemic Goldie's Bird-of-Paradise, which displays brilliantly in the montane forest. The Gomwa Guesthouse (run by Siyosi and Amy) serves as the recommended base for visiting the display sites, offering friendly hospitality and local guiding. The Goldie's Bird-of-Paradise is endemic to the D'Entrecasteaux Islands (Fergusson and Normanby) and found nowhere else on Earth. The Curl-crested Manucode also shows well here. Access by boat from Alotau in Milne Bay Province, or by small aircraft to Esa'ala. The island also offers snorkelling on fringing reefs and interactions with traditional Kula Ring trading communities.

Morobe Province (Huon Peninsula)

Purpose-built safari-style birding camp at 1,800 m elevation in Satop Village, in the heart of the Saruwaged Mountain Range on the Huon Peninsula, Morobe Province. Established in 2019 by birders for birders, the camp provides unrivalled access to the highly sought Huon Astrapia, Wahnes' Parotia and Emperor Bird-of-Paradise — all endemic to the Huon Peninsula and among the most difficult birds-of-paradise to observe elsewhere. Sites accessed by 4WD to 2,000 m, requiring good fitness in rugged mountainous terrain. The camp partners with traditional landowners and operates with a strong conservation ethos. East Sepik Province

Remote eco-lodge standing 300 m above the Karawari River on a lone ridge surrounded by tropical rainforest, deep in the East Sepik Province lowlands. The lodge records 229 bird species including three birds-of-paradise (Twelve-wired, King, and Magnificent Riflebird). Access only by Trans Niugini's charter aircraft (Mon/Wed/Fri from Mount Hagen). Ten private cottages built from local materials overlook the forest canopy. Guided motorised jet-boat excursions penetrate remote riverine forest where Twelve-wired Birds-of-Paradise display in the canopy — the same type of display tree famously filmed by Sir David Attenborough. Traditional Sepik villages, spirit houses and master carvers are visited by boat. Birding is superb in the early morning mist along forest paths.

Western Province

Locally owned and operated birding tours based in Kiunga, a remote port town on the upper Fly River in Western Province, run by specialist guide Samuel Kepuknai. The surrounding vast tracts of lowland swamp forest and rainforest host over 300 bird species including many rare Trans-Fly endemics. Early morning motorised boat trips up the Fly and Elevala Rivers penetrate wilderness forest for the majestic Palm Cockatoo, Sclater's Crowned Pigeon and remarkable lowland birds-of-paradise. Enga Province

Community-owned eco-lodge at 2,861 m elevation in Enga Province, approximately 40 minutes from Mount Hagen, widely considered one of the finest bird photography lodges in the world. The only birding lodge on Earth where Birds of Paradise routinely visit in-garden feeding platforms — two species display in the grounds daily, providing unparalleled photography opportunities. Sandaun Province (Torricelli Mountains)

The Tenkile Conservation Alliance (TCA), founded in 2001, works with over 12,000 people from 50 villages to save the Critically Endangered Tenkile (Scott's Tree Kangaroo, Dendrolagus scottae) from extinction in the Torricelli Mountain Range of Sandaun and East Sepik Provinces. Tenkile numbers have increased from approximately 100 to 300 animals thanks to conservation work. The Torricelli Mountains are the only place in the world where three Dendrolagus species co-exist: the Tenkile, the Weimang (Golden-mantled Tree Kangaroo) and Finsch's Tree Kangaroo. Ecotour visitors trek with trained TCA rangers into montane forest to observe tree kangaroos in their natural habitat, contributing directly to ongoing conservation funding. Central Province

Papua New Guinea's first national park (est. 1969), situated 23 km northeast of Port Moresby at 630–833 m elevation in the Central Province. The park's main drawcard is its readily accessible Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise display trees — some are just off the road, making them ideal for photography. Between April and October, during peak breeding season, displaying males in full crimson and gold plumage perform elaborate dances to attract females. The park records 231 bird species across 58 families, including five bird-of-paradise species. A well-maintained trail network winds through lowland and mid-montane forest. Best visited at dawn when birds are most active.

Port Moresby, Tari Valley, Sepik, Mount Hagen
