Wildlife Photography Hides in Philippines
The Philippines is one of the world's most biodiverse and endemic-rich wildlife photography destinations — an archipelago of 7,641 islands that has been geographically isolated long enough to evolve a staggering array of unique species, including 237 endemic bird species, the Philippine Eagle (the world's largest eagle by weight), the Philippine Tarsier (one of the world's smallest primates), the Philippine Crocodile, and the Palawan Peacock-Pheasant. The Philippine Eagle — national symbol and apex predator of Mindanao's old-growth forests — is the supreme target for wildlife photographers visiting the country; the Philippine Eagle Center in Davao and the Mt. Kitanglad Range Natural Reserve provide the most reliable access, with the Eagle Center allowing controlled close-range photography of rehabilitation birds and the mountain slopes hosting wild pairs. Subic Bay Forest Reserve on Luzon is one of the Philippines' most productive birding sites, with habituated Sooty Woodpeckers, Luzon Racquet-Tails, and Rufous Hornbills accessible on early morning walks; the nearby Candaba Swamp is the premier Philippine site for migratory duck photography, with Cotton Pygmy Geese, Garganey, and Northern Pintail in their thousands in winter. Whale Shark watching — and responsible snorkeling photography — operates at Oslob in Cebu and Donsol in Sorsogon, where aggregations of up to 20+ Butanding allow in-water photography at close range. Tubbataha Reef Natural Park in the Sulu Sea, accessible only by liveaboard, is one of Asia's finest underwater photography destinations: UNESCO World Heritage-listed for its extraordinary coral biomass, sharks, rays, and sea turtles.
