Wildlife Photography Hides in Samoa

Samoa is an undervisited but rewarding wildlife photography destination in the heart of Polynesia, where the Samoan Rainforest holds the Tooth-billed Pigeon (Manumea) — one of the world's rarest birds, with a population of under 200 — alongside the striking Ma'oma'o (Polynesian Wattled Honeyeater), Samoan Fantail, and vast colonies of Samoa Flying Foxes that roost in coastal trees in their thousands. Tafua Rainforest Reserve on Savai'i, managed by the Samoa Conservation Society, is the most reliable site for Samoan endemic bird photography in intact lowland rainforest. Palolo Deep Marine Reserve near Apia protects an extraordinary coral garden accessible by snorkelling, with sea turtles, reef sharks, and colourful reef fish within swimming distance of the shore. Aleipata Islands Marine Protected Area on Upolu's southeastern coast provides accessible sea turtle nesting photography.
