Wildlife Photography Hides in São Tomé and Príncipe

São Tomé and Príncipe is one of Africa's most extraordinary ornithological destinations — two remote volcanic islands in the Gulf of Guinea that have evolved 28 endemic bird species (found nowhere else on Earth) plus dozens of island-endemic subspecies, all within a compact geography accessible from a single flight. The São Tomé Grosbeak is one of the world's rarest birds; the Dwarf Olive Ibis is critically endangered; the Newton's (Giant) Sunbird is spectacular. On Príncipe — the smaller island, one of Africa's most isolated — the Príncipe Kingfisher, Príncipe Thrush, Príncipe Drongo, and Príncipe Scops Owl are all found only here. The highland Obô Natural Park on São Tomé, accessible via a 3-hour guided trek from Bom Sucesso Botanical Garden to Lagoa Amélia crater lake, concentrates the most species in the most photogenic setting — ancient tree ferns, giant begonias, and endemic orchids framing birds found nowhere else. Sea turtles are a second major attraction: all four tropical sea turtle species nest on both islands, with the Jalé Ecolodge on São Tomé's southern coast offering direct beach access, and Príncipe's Praia Grande hosting one of the best-monitored nesting programmes in West Africa (28,886 hatchlings released in 2024–25 alone). From July–September, humpback whales migrate through the Gulf of Guinea and can be photographed on 3-hour boat excursions from São Tomé city.
