Wildlife Photography Hides in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is a rapidly emerging wildlife photography destination, with the Saudi Wildlife Authority managing an impressive network of protected areas that shelter endemic Arabian species alongside globally significant migratory bird concentrations. Asir National Park in the southwest highlands — where the Hejaz escarpment catches monsoon moisture from the Indian Ocean — holds a suite of Arabian endemic and Afro-tropical birds found nowhere else in the Peninsula: Arabian Sunbird, Arabian Warbler, Yemen Linnet, Arabian Partridge, and Philby's Partridge in juniper and acacia woodland accessible from mountain roads near Abha. The Farasan Islands Marine Protected Area in the Red Sea holds the last substantial population of Farasan Gazelle — an endemic subspecies — alongside nesting Sooty Falcon, Osprey, and excellent reef photography in crystal-clear water. Al-Asfar Lake near Haradh — the largest natural lake in Saudi Arabia — hosts enormous concentrations of Greater Flamingo and migratory waterbirds, most spectacularly in winter. Mahazat as-Sayd Protected Area and Uruq Bani Ma'arid hold the world's largest wild populations of reintroduced Arabian Oryx and Houbara Bustard.
