Wildlife Photography Hides in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone is one of the most biologically significant countries in West Africa — a nation that despite enormous challenges has protected two of the most extraordinary wildlife sites on the continent. Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary and Gola Rainforest National Park were jointly designated Sierra Leone's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2025, recognition of their status as irreplaceable Upper Guinea forest ecosystems. Tiwai Island is a 1,200 ha island in the Moa River hosting one of Africa's highest primate densities: 11 species including the Critically Endangered western chimpanzee, pygmy hippopotamus, and the spectacular Diana monkey — all habituated and approachable from guided forest walks or canoe excursions at dusk. Gola Rainforest National Park (71,070 ha) holds a colony of 10 White-necked Picathartes nests on rocky outcrops accessible via a 16 km forest trail — arguably the finest photography subject in West Africa, a prehistoric-looking bare-headed bird at its mud-cup nest. The 2025 Ornis Birding tour recorded seven West African Pittas in Gola — a remarkable tally for one of Africa's most elusive and spectacular forest birds. Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, just 40 minutes from Freetown, offers access to over 100 rehabilitated chimpanzees alongside the adjacent Western Area Peninsula National Park, which holds the White-necked Picathartes colony at Guma Valley Dam within day-trip distance of the capital. Outamba-Kilimi National Park in the north is Sierra Leone's best site for canoe-based hippo photography.
