Wildlife Photography Hides in Taiwan
Taiwan is one of Asia's most rewarding and accessible wildlife photography destinations — a subtropical island of extraordinary ecological diversity, from coral-fringed southern beaches to 3,952m alpine peaks, with an endemic fauna shaped by 10,000 years of geographic isolation from mainland China. The island has 15 endemic bird species found nowhere else on Earth, including the spectacular Mikado Pheasant — Taiwan's national bird — reliably photographed at Dasyueshan National Forest Recreation Area and Alishan at dawn; Swinhoe's Pheasant in lowland forest; the iridescent Taiwan Blue Magpie along mountain roads; and Collared Bush Robin in high-elevation clearings. The Black-faced Spoonbill — one of the world's rarest large waders, with a global population of under 6,000 — winters in internationally significant numbers at Chiku Lagoon near Tainan, where the Black-faced Spoonbill Reserve provides dedicated photography platforms October through April. Huben in Yunlin County is the global stronghold of the Fairy Pitta: up to 50 breeding pairs nest in the bamboo forest each summer, and the community-run eco-tourism programme provides guided dawn watches to within 15 metres of nesting birds — one of Asia's most celebrated birdwatching experiences. Kenting National Park at Taiwan's southern tip hosts one of East Asia's most spectacular raptor migrations, with 300,000+ Grey-faced Buzzards and Chinese Goshawks streaming south on northeast monsoon days in October. Taiwan's underwater world, endemic cyprinid fish, firefly valleys, and nocturnal herpetofauna add further dimensions to a wildlife photography destination that rewards repeat visits.
