Wildlife Photography Hides in Ukraine

Ukraine is a vast and biodiverse country whose wildlife riches remain little-known to international photographers. The Carpathian regions of western Ukraine — Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Chernivtsi Oblasts — are fully accessible, safe for international visitors, and harbour one of Europe's densest large carnivore populations. Synevyr National Park in Zakarpattia is home to one of Europe's largest brown bear rehabilitation centres (32 bears on a 12-hectare forest enclosure) and the Valley of Wolves Ecopark — Ukraine's only wolf park, where four wolf breeds approach visitors in a semi-natural forest setting. The Carpathian National Nature Park and Carpathian Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO) offer guided wildlife tracking for bear, wolf, lynx and chamois through primeval beech forests listed as a World Heritage Site, supported by Frankfurt Zoological Society ecotourism infrastructure. In Lviv, Oleksandr Ruchko of the Ukrainian Birdwatching Centre (founded 2002) is one of Ukraine's most experienced English-speaking bird guides, offering half-day Lviv parks birding and full-day excursions to Roztochia Reserve and the Dniester Canyon. The Volyn Oblasts of northwestern Ukraine hold the vast West Polissia wetlands — a mosaic of floodplain lakes, raised bogs and river systems that is globally important for Aquatic Warbler, Great Snipe, Greater Spotted Eagle and Azure Tit. Shatsky National Park, Prypiat-Stokhid National Park and the Olmany Mires (straddling the Belarus border) are the flagship protected areas of this wilderness. The Ukrainian Danube Delta near Vylkove hosts a photography hide on Ermakiv Island built in 2021 by Rewilding Ukraine, overlooking Dalmatian Pelican, Spoonbill and Pygmy Cormorant nesting colonies. NOTE: only western Ukrainian regions are listed here; conflict-affected areas (Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Luhansk, Mykolaiv) are excluded. Check current FCO/EU advisories before travelling.
