Wildlife Photography Hides in Vietnam

Vietnam is one of Southeast Asia's most biodiverse and exciting wildlife photography destinations — a long, narrow country spanning tropical lowlands, Annamite montane forests, and the Mekong Delta, sheltering some of the world's rarest and least-photographed endemic species. The Annamite Mountains along the Laos border form one of the world's last great zoological frontiers: the Saola was only described by science in 1992, and the range holds Edwards's Pheasant (critically endangered, confined to central Vietnam), Vietnamese Pheasant, Annam Partridge, and the recently rediscovered Vietnamese Crested Argus. Bach Ma National Park in the central highlands is the most reliable site for Edwards's Pheasant photography, with resident birds in the forest above the former French hill station; Ke Go Nature Reserve and A Luoi Valley provide further Annamite endemic access. Van Long Nature Reserve in Ninh Binh is the world's most important site for Delacour's Langur — a critically endangered black-and-white primate with a global population of around 200 — viewable by rowing boat through dramatic karst limestone scenery. Tram Chim National Park in the Mekong Delta is Vietnam's only remaining site for Sarus Crane — up to 1,000 birds present November to May — alongside Lesser Adjutants, Painted Storks, and the full suite of Mekong wetland birds. Cat Tien National Park near Ho Chi Minh City offers the most accessible lowland tropical forest wildlife experience in southern Vietnam, with Siamese Crocodile, banteng, gaur, and a famous nocturnal owl walk on the main road.

Home to 300 bird species including spectacular waterbirds, peafowl, and hornbills. Vietnam's first ethical elephant tourism programme launched in 2018 (with Animals Asia); elephants roam freely and tours follow the animals rather than controlling them.
